Children:
1. Berthina Elizabeth "Bertha" 6 Feb 1917 -23 Mar 1990 was named for both Grandmothers. Elvis' mor was Cynthia Elizabeth and Mary's mor was Nancy Berthina. My kids thought it was hilarious, that she was named for Grandmothers, and neither grandmother was called by that name. They were Cynthia and Nancy. Bertha mar # 1. Frank Ashley (7 Oct 1911 -?) 17 Oct 1937. Frank died of miners tb. Mrs. Funderburk said she was rubbing his feet when he died, trying to warm them for him. She said they were sooo cold. My Dad, Albert Martin Roland, took Bertha to be married. It was raining and the ground was a lob lolly, to muddy for a car.
He drove a tractor and she rode on the fender. Frank Ashley had dated Mom.Artie Mae (Adcock) Roland's youngest sister, Bessie Berthel (Adcock) Dean, before he and Bertha married. Bertha m#2 Ira Cox (20 May 1899 - ?) . Bertha had picture albums of her two husbands and families when James and I married. They both ended with the grave pictures. She said she thought God didn't mean her to have a husband. That was sad. Bertha was not a sad person, though. She was a lot of fun. She and Frank had 3 children : LLoyd Harrison Ashley mar Helen Davis , Mabel Laverne Ashley mar Jimmy Greer, Lorita Ann Ashley mar Lindsey Cason. By Ira she had two ch Linda Kay Cox 2 Dec 1949 - 25 Dec 1997 Hot Springs, garland, AR bur Hicks Cem , Pike Co, ARmar #1Eugene Cooper, #2Jimmy Wayne Cox,#3 ?Clark,#4Boone and Dixie Lorene Cox 1 Jan !951 - 12 Jan 2007 LA. mar Edward Leroy Tinkes. When I married James and we went to AR, the Funderburk's lived in a big, big two story house by the hardware store. I don't know the name of the street, but it was just off the courthouse square. Bertha and her children lived there also. We went to Claude and Jo's (Champaine, IL )and when we next went to AR, they had moved to Kelly St. Bertha lived about a block away. we were all together at Elvis and
Mary's most of the time. Bertha and I were cooking supper at her house one night, and although she had running water, we had to heat water -no water heater. She filled the kettle and put it on the fire. I was washing dishes and when the water heated, I used it to heat my dish water, refilled the kettle and put it back on the stove. When she needed hot water, she picked up the kettle, and said, "Betty, I put this water on a long time ago and it's still cold." I said, "Well, uh, do you suppose the fact that I used it to heat my dish water --" She threw a pan at me!! A couple of times when we were looking for something , she was lighting a cigarette lighter to try and see. I'd reach up and turn on the light. She hadn't thought of that. My kids used to tie her cigarettes and lighter to her fingers with a string, because she was always looking for them. Bertha would sit in the floor and do stuff. She wuld be smoking, and drinking coffee. She kept complaining
about coffee grounds in her coffee, until one day she really looked at one of those coffee grounds and realized it was fleas. Somehow, when I did crazy stuff like that, she never caught me. Believe you me, I made plenty of boo-boos. Edward Tinkes, Lorene's was killed when a truck ran into them from behind as they were moving. Lorene was driving the car and Edward was on some cart type vehicle that she was pulling. Edward was killed instantly. Lorene was knocked out , came to and could hear the kids crying.
She tried to make herself get up and go to them, but couldn't. She was paralized from the shoulders down for the rest of her life. She was a fighter. Several times, the doctors were ready to give up on her, but she pulled through each time. We used to call each other for prayer for any of the folks who were ill. Jo Lindsey was part of that prayerline. Linda Kay got really bad sick and couldn't get herself to the bathroom. They got her to the hospital, and Lorene told me that they had talked the day before Linda died, that Linda was better, and was planning to go home in a day or two. They came in and gave her a shot, she went into convulsions and died. She was allergig to morphene and Lorene thought that was what they gave her.
2. William Harrison Funderburk "Willie" - although he didn't like to be called Willie. That came directly from him - so -I called him Bill. 26 Jan 1920 - 14 Sep 1996. Bill was also named after grandparents. William Andrew Parker and John Harrison Funderburk. Bill mar Margie Ann Lockeby dau of William and Mertie (?) Lockeby (24 Aug 1925- living) 18 Sep 1943. Bill and Margie had two children: Alton Wayne Funderburk , Don Wade Funderburk . James and I stayed with Bill and Margie some. James went to work at Horatio, AR where they lived, and we stayed with them until we could get a house. Alton Wayne and Don Wade were youngsters at the time. There was one night that bugs were coming in the house, those hard shelled brown bugs - Junebugs? and they would get on Gwen and scare her. I got up turned on the light and we got acquainted with bugs. You could pick them up, let them crawl on you and all that kind of fun stuff. (yuk!) But I didn't want my babies to be afraid of things. Bill told me later that he was ready to shoot us. He wanted to sleep. Margie was quiter than Bertha. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, and cooking. She was a good cook. Used to make a stew with vegetables and cut up weiners that I really liked.
3. Ora Vercie Funderburk 25 Nov 1921- ?. "Odie"mar Jobe Truman Adcock "J. T. " (13 Mar 1918 - ?) They had four children: Sherry Lynn Adcock (stillbirth) , Jerry Dale Adcock (only lived a few hours) ,Bobbie Jean Adcock 13 Sept 1947 - 8 Dec 2007), Bennie Gayle Adcock 4 May 1952 - 16 Sep 1998 ) Olton TX. Bobbie mar #1 Billey Joe DeBusk #2 Ollie Hollis Young. Bennie mar David Erwin Ferguson (b 13 May 1946 - 5 Sep 2004). Bobbie had three DeBusk ch: Billey Joe DeBusk Jr, Mary Angela DeBusk m Richard Perry, and Mona Gail DeBusk m Eddie Wood. O.H. and one Young child Hollie Jean Young m Tracy Voles. Bennie had three children: Michael David Ferguson m Heidi Rouse?, Tammie Renee Ferguson m ? #1Cook #2 Lucas, and Robert Ferguson. m Pamela West.Bobbie and Bennie could tell some of the funniest stories and keep me laughing for hours. Of course,
O.H. and David were part of the fun. When they moved up north (?) they were homesick and had to find things to keep themselves occupied. They joined a square dance club. Bobbie won a prize at one time for not complaining about her neck hurting from looking up at O. H. (He was tall and she was way shorter.) In fact, he gat a new hat once, and they were going to have a picture made. He said be sure to get his hat in the picture. Whoever was making the picture said if they got his hat, Bobbie wouldn't be in the picture. That was okay, he said, just be sure and get the hat. O.H. worked as a bouncer at a nightclub in Plainview, and there came a night when Bobbie and another woman got into a fight. He had to go break it up. He said Bobbie drew back to hit him, and he thought, no, she won't do that in here. She did, and so,here is the bouncer, running around trying to catch the blood from his nose. There was a time up north that the two of them were going to some masquerade party and they went as Dagwood and Blondie. O.H. at 6ft something was Blondie, and Bobbie was Dagwood. So, O. H. has on a dress and is in high heels, with a blonde wig - and the police pull them over. On one of the square dance nights, Bobbie got in dutch for something and had to wear a dunce hat, and sit on a stool. She said, "and I fell off." I said, "Well -" " But Aunt Betty, it wasn't 12 inches high!" Another time Bennie had on this knitted sweater. They, of course, had to change partners often. Bennie had a loose thread and it caught on the guys shirt somehow, so they changed partners, and Bennies sweater is unraveling. She has to follow that guy, and is laughing so hard she is wetting herself. . Both Bobbie and Bennie died young. Bobbie got poly chondritis, a disease where the body attacks itself. Her body was destroying the cartilage in her body. It would deposit it in her lungs and she would have pneumonia and be in and out of the hospital.
On top of that she became diabetic. Eventually she got breast cancer, and had to have both breast removed. Bennie got breast cancer and had to have a breast removed, Then cancer developed in a kidney and that was removed. Then the other kidney, and she had to be on dialysis. She died before they got a kidney.J.T. was my Uncle (mother's baby brother) before I married James and became his sister-in-law. He and Uncle Clifford (the next youngest of Mom's brothers) were at our house a lot back after Grand Dad Adcock died. Granny had gone blind, and the boys were more or less, kind of at a loss.
They hitchhiked from AR to CA to TX and back to AR. Uncle J was generally at our house for cotton pulling each year. Both he and Buddy, my oldest brother, could pull a bale of cotton a day and always were racing to see who could get the most. He and Ora came to our house in Maple Tx and stayed while Uncle J found work and got a house. Bobbie Jean was a baby then. She could walk, and talk. There was a time Mom had both her and Docha and Clifford's Rudy Carol. She opened the door and Bobbie was pushing her way out. Mother told her she couldn't go out. Bobbie pushed her way out, looked up at
Mother and said, "See!' Mother laughed about that often. She said she guessed Bobbie showed her. Ora and I were connected somehow. She could look at me, and I would know what she was thinking (asking) and I would answer her, and neither of us say a word. I stayed with them after we all moved to Hart, and she could be in one room cleaning house and I could be elsewhere in the house and we would just start singing - the same song and at the same verse. It was uncanny, but didn't really bother us. We would go to AR to visit and we would sing all the way there and all the way back, and never sing the same song twice. That was about 12 hours there and 12 hours back. Those were fun trips. The Burma Shave signs, the old gas stations with an overhang in front. A lot of times , it would come a big, heavy rain, and we would pull under one of those overhangs , to wait out the storm.
4. Mary Jo Funderburk 1926 - living mar# 1. Clyde Finney one child Caroline Verne. Caroline was adopted by Jo's #2 Claude Lindsey. Children ; Claudetta Jo Lindsey,Marvin Ray Lindsey. Gwen was just a baby when we went to Champaine, IL to Jo and Claudes. James was once again looking for work. Marvin was their baby. We went over one day, and Marvin was in the playpen. Jo told me to just put Gwen in with him. He fussed when I did, and I told him if he didn't want her in there to throw her out, He sure tried. Poor Gwen. Claude was fun. Once when we were eating watermelon - Jo cut it in circles, rind and all, and put it on plates. When I went to sit down, my watermelon had a circle of onion on top!
5. Dixie Leona Funderburk 27 Jul 1929 mar Carl Jackson Murphy They had 3 daughters, Glenda, June & Sharon. Sharon mar a Fischer. I didn't get to be around Dixie and Carl much. They lived in San Antonio, TX, and usually made it back to Murfreesboro for the reunion. In July of each year. It wasn't for a long time that Dixie warmed to me. By the time she decided to hold on to mme when we would start up a hill (or down), I was so unsteady on my feet that I was afraid I would let her fall. We wrote some when she and Carl were failing in health. She called me when Carl died. I will never forget that call. She said, "Betty, I just sat and held him in my arms for a long time." Carl was on life support. He had diabetes, and had had an open heart surgery. June also had diabetes, and she passed away after James and I divorced and no one let me know.
