He mar#3 Cynthia Elizabeth Davis (30 Apr 1866 - 5 Aug 1905) 12 March 1885 Thompson Twp, Pike County, AR. She - dau of Abraham C and Rachel Ianthy (White) Davis. He out lived his third wife by 18 years and died of pneumonia. He was buried at Hicks Cemetery, Murfreesboro, Pike, AR. Pa (Elvis) said that his Dad lived longer after Cynthia died than he had lived with any of his wives. ( I saw on some site ---sorry, I didn't remember the url ---- that Cynthia was buried with a baby in her arms. I had never heard that.) I had heard quite a bit about the Funderburk family, but that was a new one. I should have the 2 babies names in some of my stuff, but, at the moment, don't know just where.
James had said that John and a brother - Frank Funderburk, I believe, and some neighbors got into an argument that turned ugly. The man pulled a knife and cut John badly. It disemboweled him. He, with Frank's help, brought his entrails home in his hat. I don't know when this was, but he apparently healed.

She was quite active up until she fell and broke a hip. She had a place up close to Cowhide Cove where the old Funderburk place was. It was back in the woods. She had all kinds of plants, and of course, lots of trees. What I remember most was the hummingbird feeders she had out front hanging from an old swing set. There were always hummingbirds feeding there. One of her sons bought this place and they moved a trailer house - with great dificulty into the woods.

I do remember some of these folks. They used to come by and visit Pa & Grandma ( Elvis & Mary) while we lived there. Elvis had cancer, and back in the "30's or '40's, Xray(radiation) was experimental. They really burned a lot of patients badly. Pa's cancer was on his face, and they did too much. As he aged, his face looked burned and tight (like from a burn). I remember him being really hurt & upset once, when he had gone to town & kids ran from him, calling him a monster. Before his death, he talked to the undertaker (I believe Jeff Riley was his name) if his face could be made to look more normal, and they did fix him up. In his later years, his scars streched so tight, it was hard for him to open his mouth to eat. He would have to push food through his lips. I remember that saying grace before meals meant a lot to Pa, but when one of the daughters gave them a tv, it seemed everyone would fix thenselves a plate, and head for the living room, to eat in front of the tv. I spent a lot of time alone with Pa when he became, more or less, housebound. He told me that he wished the family would ,at least, eat the evening meal at the table so he could thank the Lord for food. After he told me that, I was just about ready to fight, to make it happen!!

He was unable to work for a lot of years. During warm weather he would walk to town (Pa never drove), and join the elderly gentlemen, who would sit on benches at the courthouse square there in Murfreesboro and pass the time talking, joking, and probably --- watching the girls go by. Then came the summer that he could no longer make the trip. He started to walk to town, came back, and was so tired, he didn't even try anymore.
Eventually, the cancer ate a hole clear through his cheek, and Grandma would make a cloth stiff with Vaseline and fasten over the hole. There was an odor that went with the burn and cancer. When they would start to church on Sunday mornings, Grandma would spray his shirt a little with air freshner. There came a day when she grabbed a can, sprayed him, & they went to church. After they got home, she realized she had used bug spray by mistake. He just laughed about that. Said it worked, there didn't any bugs bother him at church. The day he died he had appointment at the hospital. There were to be tests, & they had him in a wheel chair. He was talking to the gentleman who was to do the tests, when he just suddenly slumped down in the wheel chair. He never regained consciousness, but lived several days longer. Dr Hiram Ward had told us that when the cancer got to the brain that it was over for Pa.
James and I were living in Amarillo, TX at that time. Pa's family were all gathered round him as he passed away. It was really cold & ugly , wet & muddy, for the funeral. Afterward, one of the sisters, I believe it was Dixie Murphy, had to hurry home. James, a friend (Dane Lockeby) & I, took her to Hot Springs to catch a plane. The ground was frozen solid. Coming home, we got to a hill the car wouldn't climb. After several tries, James had to park it. We walked to the nearest house. Those folks were life savers. ( I don't remember their names, but have thanked the Lord for them) They invited us in, and let us sit up by their heater. They also let us use their phone to call home. I had a nursing baby there with Grandma , my youngest, James Duane born 29 Nov 1961. He had to make it on sugar water until I got there the next day.
His sisters, brothers and the rest of the family would come for family reunions in July of each year. I should have gotten better acquainted with them. It's just that there were so many of them, and only one of me. (& I was shy) I think I have some pictures of those reunions, and will put them in an album.

  1. Betty do you know about the Funderburk reunions we have every year in Murfreesboro, AR? I can't remember if I've met you. I'm Tammy Funderburk Parsons, and Dale Funderburk is my grandfather, Billy is my dad. I guess maybe you may remember if we've met... I forget names, but I remember faces! =) The reunion this year is on May 22nd, but people get there on Thursday before it & hang out at the lake eating, visiting, and karaoke-ing. Hope to see you there this year. You can find me on FaceBook if you like. I can give you more details about the reunion if you need them.
